Sex differences in erythropoietic aging: the role of metabolism and protein synthesis

Sex differences in erythropoietic aging: the role of metabolism and protein synthesis

Aging profoundly affects hematopoiesis, particularly erythropoiesis, a process highly dependent on mitochondrial metabolism and tightly regulated protein synthesis. Increasing evidence suggests that these alterations are differentially regulated in males and females, although the mechanisms underlying these sex dependent differences remain poorly understood. The aim of our study is to investigate how aging impacts erythropoiesis in male and female mice, with a particular focus on metabolic regulation, protein synthesis, and hypusine-dependent translation, a spermidine regulated pathway essential for erythroid differentiation. We will discuss how sex specific differences in metabolic and translational control may contribute to the age associated decline in erythropoietic function and how these mechanisms could represent potential therapeutic targets to restore erythropoiesis during aging
