Laura Gutiérrez Gutiérrez

Laura Gutiérrez obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biology (Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology) at the Faculty of Biology, Universidad de Oviedo (Spain), in 1998. She obtained an MSc in Biotechnology in 2000 at the University of Leicester (United Kingdom, with Distinction), having completed her Master’s dissertation under the supervision of Dr A. de Klein from the Genetics Department (ErasmusMC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands). She then joined the Cell Biology Department in ErasmusMC as a PhD researcher, initially supervised by Professor D. Whyatt, and obtained her PhD in 2005 (thesis title: “Studies on Gata1: Cell Cycle, Survival and Differentiation”), under the supervision of Professor F. Grosveld and co-supervised by Professor J. Philipsen.

She continued in the Cell Biology Department as a postdoctoral researcher in Professor J. Philipsen’s research group, where she developed her own lines of research, focusing on haematopoietic lineage specification and the role of Gata1 in these processes.

She was awarded a VENI grant (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research -NWO- “Transcriptome-wise dendritic cell manipulation”) and she joined Sanquin Research (Amsterdam, Netherlands) in 2010 as a junior group leader in the Blood Cell Research Department (headed by Dr. T.K. van den Berg), where her research focused on megakaryopoiesis and platelet function. She returned to Spain on a Ramón y Cajal contract and, after two years at the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria San Carlos (San Carlos Health Research Institute, Madrid), has been working at ISPA since January 2018 as Principal Investigator, affiliated with the Department of Medicine at the Universidad de Oviedo.

The Platelets research group’s origins date back to 2010, when Laura Gutiérrez became head of her own research group as Junior Group Leader at Sanquin Research (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). At Sanquin Research, she supervised two PhD researchers, a senior laboratory technician and two postdoctoral researchers, publishing in specialised, high-impact scientific journals. In August 2015, she returned to Spain on a Ramón y Cajal contract, initially in the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria San Carlos, where she supervised a postdoctoral researcher, a laboratory technician and students from the Spanish medical residency programme, who contributed to the group’s research projects and the production of thematic reviews. In January 2018, she moved to ISPA, establishing this research group by recruiting highly-respected associated clinical researchers and gradually incorporating PhD researchers and a postdoctoral researcher.

The work of the Platelets research group focuses on megakaryocytic differentiation, and the production and function of platelets in health and illness. Specifically, we are interested in the mechanisms of transcriptional regulation and protein translation during megakaryopoiesis: how they can be affected by haematological and non-haematological pathologies of different types and, in turn, affect platelet quality and function. We are particularly interested in megakaryocytic and haematopoietic differentiation, and how different conditions of stress or pathological situations influence this process. By understanding how haematopoiesis is regulated normally or in conditions of stress, we can use this knowledge to help develop new and/or personalised therapies. We take a multidisciplinary approach to research, and have therefore established collaborations with clinical departments such as psychiatry, ophthalmology, cardiovascular medicine, dermatology, paediatrics, etc. Through these collaborations, we intend to study the function or role or platelets in non-haematological pathologies, and also explore the use of platelets for diagnosis, prognosis and the development of platelet-based therapeutic applications.
