Professor Ana Suárez

Ana Suárez Díaz obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the Universidad de Oviedo. She specialised in Clinical Immunology after her period of training as a Resident Intern Biologist in the Immunology Department of the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA), where she combined clinical practice with basic and clinical research, as well as completing her PhD thesis.

She subsequently took up a position as an Immunology lecturer in the Department of Functional Biology at the Universidad de Oviedo, where she created a research group on Cellular and Molecular Immunology, working in close collaboration with specialist health professionals from several HUCA departments. Since then she has obtained national and regional competitive funding for several research projects, most of which have been genetic and functional studies of autoimmune pathologies, cytokines and minority subpopulations of cells associated with immunity disorders. More recently, the group’s research has focused on endothelial damage and cardiovascular risk in several inflammatory pathologies.

Over the last five years, she has been principal investigator on two health research projects funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, whose results have been published in over 50 scientific articles in mid- and high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.

This multidisciplinary research group is coordinated by the Department of Functional Biology’s Immunology section at the Universidad de Oviedo. The group is made up of basic and clinical researchers, working on projects in the field of inflammatory diseases.

Initially, the group’s research focused on patients with autoimmune diseases, analysing various factors at the genetic, molecular and cellular levels. Its work later expanded to include research on a range of chronic inflammatory diseases. Our newest line of research analyses cardiovascular disease in inflammatory and autoimmune pathologies, given its prevalence in patients with these conditions. The research aims to identify new biomarkers for vascular dysfunction, to enable early detection and appropriate risk stratification and learn about the mechanisms which cause the increase in damage and the deterioration of endothelial repair that lie behind vascular disease in these pathologies. To meet this objective, we perform in vitro and ex vivo phenotypic and functional analyses of various cell subpopulations, quantify circulating molecules, analyse gene and protein expression and identify genetic polymorphism, all of which is analysed in relation to the clinical data. This type of study can potentially be extended to other physiological or pathological contexts in which the evaluation of inflammatory and immunopathological markers is relevant.
