El ISPA organiza la conferencia GDNF – a new biomarker and precision medicine target defining a subgroup of schizophrenia, del investigador de la Universidad de Helsinki y el Instituto Karolinska Jaan Olle Andressoo. La charla tendrá lugar el viernes 28 de marzo a partir de las 11:00 h en el Aula C de la Zona de Docencia de la Facultad de Medicina, junto a la Cafetería de Personal del HUCA.
El Dr. Andressoo es Profesor Asistente en el Departamento de Neurobiología, Ciencias de los Cuidados y Sociedad del Instituto Karolinska (Suecia) y Profesor Asociado de Neurociencias traslacionales en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Helsinki (Finlandia).
Temática de la charla
Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is distributed throughout the peripheral and central nervous system. One of its more prominent functions is to prevent apoptosis of dopaminergic and motor neurons, with implications in various pathologies such as Parkinson´s disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It is also responsible for the determination of spermatogonia into primary spermatocytes.
During the talk, GDNF general biological roles will be covered (i.e. role in urogenital block development, in the enteric nervous system, or in disease, such as ALS or Parkinson´s) to be followed up by the Group´s unpublished results on brain monoamines -dopamine and serotonin biology- and its implicacions in disease, beyond the already known Parkinson´s or ALS. Our findings highlight how protein levels -not genetic mutations per se- can drive a gradient phenotypes from health to disease.
